Houston Celebrates Worldwide Day of Music

Story by Sarah Hobson

On June 21, Houston will join cities around the world to mark Make Music Day. Since its launch in France in 1982 as the Fête de la Musique (meaning both “festival of music” and “make music”), the event has grown to span more than 2,000 cities in 120 countries. More than 5.3 million music-making events took place nationwide in 2025.

Make Music Day is free and open to everyone. Houston’s events are led by Fresh Arts and supported by partners Houston Professional Musicians’ Association, Consul General of France, and the Houston Music Advisory Board.

“Make Music Day has always been about access and joy,” said Gracie Chávez, Fresh Arts Program Director. “This year, with the World Cup in Houston and families gathering for Father’s Day, we have a powerful opportunity to celebrate music as a universal language that connects us across cultures and generations.”

Musicians, vocalists and instrumentalists of all kinds are invited to participate by attending or hosting an event. All you have to do is pull out your instrument and start playing on June 21. Houston’s Make Music Day webpage has a complimentary poster generator for promotion (whether live or virtual). Those performing are encouraged to use the hashtags #MakeMusicDay and #MakeMusicDayHou.

So far, more than 111 artists and 27 venues are participating. Events include a day-long festival at Kojak’s from 1-6 p.m., a mix of bluegrass, classical, electronic, and dance at ARTECHOUSE Houston from 2:30-8 p.m., and a variety of acts throughout the day at Sawyer Yards, The Garage @2509 Alabama, and others. Tiffany Renee', performing at The Garage @2509 Alabama, said, “As both a musician and music educator, I wanted to be a part of Make Music Day because I love seeing music bring people together. It celebrates every genre, every skill level, and every person who has something to share. Events like this remind us that music isn't just entertainment. It's connection, joy, and community.” She added, “For Houston, I think Make Music Day creates a sense of belonging and support for the many talented musicians throughout our city and surrounding areas. It's a chance to celebrate each other, inspire one another, and share the gift of music with everyone.”

Angel Ramos, who also goes by Winchester is Burning, will be playing at Tejas Brewery. “Events like these place a well deserved spotlight on the talent and hard work that musicians display, and the incredible support you get from these small businesses really makes a difference in the scene,” he said.

“Make Music Day has a lot of potential to bring communities together in a festive spirit,” said Ed Amash of Kojaks, a venue participating for the fourth year in a row. “Make Music Day is important because you don't have to be a professional musician in order to get out and play your favorite instrument. It's a chance for music to be local and open to everyone both as a performer and a listener.”
