Where to Buy Local Music in Houston

Story by Heather Steward

Many music fans today desire alternatives to streaming, digital downloads, and online purchasing, myself included. I grew up frequenting record stores like Sam Goody, Warehouse Music, and FYE, so nostalgia plays a big part in my music consumption. The experience of browsing a physical catalogue for hidden gems simply cannot be replicated on a computer. While the corporate stores of my youth have disappeared from Houston, many independent music stores dot the landscape of the city today. I want to highlight several shops where you can buy physical music media, specifically from local (or regional) artists. In alphabetical order:

*Hours and locations subject to change. Confirm with the shop before planning your visit!

31RECORDS

Memorial City

10910 Katy Fwy, Houston, TX 77043

This small shop is the store front of the indie punk/hardcore rock label 31RECORDS. Located in one stall of a sprawling antique mall, 31RECORDS specializes in punk music on vinyl, CD, and cassette, including releases from the label. Recent releases include “Criminal Dreams,” a collection of singles from San Antonio’s BULLSHIT DETECTOR and “All Roads” by Austin’s DYLAN DISASTER AND THE REVELRY. My visit coincided with the recent acquisition of one collector’s entire inventory.

Hours:

Mon-Fri: Closed

Sat: 12pm-6pm

Sun: 1pm-6pm

Cactus Music

Montrose

2110 Portsmouth St, Houston, TX 77098

Cactus Music needs little introduction to music fans in the area. Featuring rows upon rows of vinyl, live music performances, and community-building events, this spot is more than a store. It’s a historic hub of local music culture. As a huge supporter of the local music scene, Quinn Bishop took the time to sit down with Houston Music Classifieds last summer to share the history and philosophy of Cactus Music. Hours:

Sun: 12pm-7pm

Mon-Thurs: 10am-7pm

Fri-Sat: 10am-8pm

Gneiss Sounds

Magnolia Park

6733 Harrisburg Blvd, Houston, TX 77011

This eclectic indie shop offers a carefully curated selection of new/used vinyls, tapes, and CDs. It features releases from Rite Field Records, a Texas based collective for indie music and culture. Special offerings include music publications and merchandise screen-printed in house. There’s a strong emphasis on emo, hardcore, punk, and loud indie genres.

Hours:

Mon-Fri: Closed

Sat-Sun: 1pm-6pm

Lonesome Frog Records

Spring Branch

1900 Blalock Rd, Ste E, Houston, TX 77080

Lonesome Frog Records is an inviting music store offering new and used vinyl records, CDs, and cassette tapes. The selection is turned over every couple of weeks, so there are new titles available frequently.  Releases from local musicians are featured in a dedicated case right at the entrance. Limited audio equipment, memorabilia, and merchandise can also be found here. Every Tuesday to Friday if you buy a record,  you get to pick a free record from the free record box. They are wheelchair accessible, pet friendly, and located in a shopping center with plenty of parking.

Hours:

Mon-Tues: Closed

Wed-Thurs: 11am-7pm

Fri-Sat: 12pm-7pm

Sun: 12pm-6pm

Memo’s Record Shop #1 (Discos y Novedades Memo)

Magnolia Park

703 75th St, Houston, TX 77011

Specializing in Spanish/Latin music, six Memo locations once dotted Houston. The original shop stands as part retailer, part museum with displays of signed guitars, photographs, and memorabilia from local and touring Latin music acts. Father and son still sling CDs, vinyls, and dubbed DVDs together. This family business also sells some basic music gear, such as strings, finger picks, and tambourines.

Hours:

Sun-Mon: 10am-7pm

Tue: Closed

Wed-Sat: 10am-7pm

Sig’s Lagoon

Midtown

3622 Main St Suite E, Houston, TX, 77002

Sig’s lagoon stocks two floors of retail space in Midtown with a massive offering of very well-categorized vinyl, in addition to tapes, books, memorabilia and toys. The store was completely reorganized in August of 2025, so if you have not visited in a while, you are in for a treat. On the first floor, you can find a bin dedicated to local music. I had so much fun searching the lower level sections, I did not even make it to the second story this time.

Hours:

Sun: 10am-8pm

Mon-Wed: 10am-9pm

Thurs-Sat: 10am-10pm

Sound Exchange

East End

101 N. Milby #3, Houston TX 77003

Sound Exchange rightly claims to have “Houston’s largest selection of metal CDs,” as there is an entire wall dedicated to this genre and medium. They feature new and used vinyls in genres like jazz, rock, metal, goth, industrial/experimental, punk, blues, R&B and soul. There are several “local” sections throughout the store for different genres and formats. Sound Exchange also buys, repairs and sells turntables. With a large inventory across genres and fast turnover, this is a store to visit often to find the best offerings.

Hours:

Open Daily: 11am-7pm

Vinal Edge Records

Heights

239 W 19th St, Houston, TX 77008

Vinal Edge Records stocks a large inventory of vinyls, CDs, and cassettes to browse in every major genre. With so much traffic and limited space, crate digging in the lower stock is encouraged on weekdays only. I found a box featuring discs and tapes from Houston hip-hop/rap artists, and another set of boxes promoting local CDs. I encourage you to get your coffee after your visit to the store, as drinks must be left at the front.

Hours:

Mon-Sat: 10am-6pm

Sun: 12pm-6pm

This is by no means a comprehensive list of places to buy music in Houston. I set out to highlight stores that intentionally emphasize local acts and limited my coverage to ones I was able to visit personally in 2026. These are places where you can support local artists and local businesses at the same time! We are planning more in-depth coverage of some Houston-area record stores later this year, so let us know any places you would like us to interview. Listen local, buy local.
